binnenskamers

Binnenskamers is a very graphic novel by debuting Dutch author Tim Enthoven. Freshly brought out by the Antwerp publisher Bries.

Bries might not (yet) be a resounding name in the world of comics, but the ones who know it will acknowledge that it stands for so much more than what the label 'comics' might make you expect. Bries publishes books that move on the fine line between comics, literature and art. Books to read, look and cherish, made by the best international authors.

Bries is also Ria Schulpen. She is the one responsible for more than ten years of bold choices and passionate work. I've had the pleasure to help her here and there the past year, and I am sure there are few more careful eyes to trust your newborn comic endeavours to.

I am glad she now teamed up with Tim Enthoven. The young man has tons of talent, surprisingly witty ideas and a work discipline that will take him far. In his first book however, it is the same discipline which keeps the main character trapped within the four walls of his student room. This sense of isolation and its disturbing consequences are masterfully captured in the author's unseen manipulation of space. Architects will definitely like the book, as will graphic designers, illustration fans and habitual readers.

You will, too. What are you waiting for?
Maybe one last advice before you rush off and buy the book: please resist the urge to colour in the pictures! The paper and format of the novel might resemble that of a colouring book, but don't be seduced. That black and white looks smashing the way it is. Just look at that cover!
